Aldermen and Boston Common Council are first elected under the new city charter.

December 15, 1885

Under Chapter 266 passed by the Massachusetts legislature in 1884, the Aldermen are now elected by district instead of at-large. Under the charter changes approved by legislation in 1885, the power of the legislative branch of city government is reduced and the board and council are expressly prohibited from naming or supervising the administrative functions of the city.
